Exclusive: Election Commission Cracks Down on Secret WhatsApp Campaign! What You Need to Know
The Election Commission has directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to halt the distribution of bulk WhatsApp messages under the label ‘Viksit Bharat Sampark’ and requested an immediate report on compliance. This action follows numerous complaints that these messages persist despite the commencement of Lok Sabha elections and the implementation of the model code of conduct (MCC).
The government has acknowledged these concerns, stating that while the messages were sent before the MCC took effect, delays in delivery may have occurred due to technical constraints.
In recent days, many WhatsApp users have received messages from ‘Viksit Bharat Sampark,’ accompanied by a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This letter outlines various government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, and Matru Vandana Yojana, while also inviting public feedback and suggestions on government initiatives.
The Election Commission’s directive aims to uphold electoral integrity by preventing any party or entity from gaining undue advantage through messaging during the election period. It is expected that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will promptly comply with this directive to ensure adherence to the Election Commission’s guidelines.
